The Packing List & Tech
What to Bring
- •Light, Breathable Fabrics: The humidity is high. Synthetic "dry-fit" gear is much better than heavy cotton for high-intensity training.
- •Slip-on Shoes: You will be taking your shoes off frequently when entering homes, some shops, and all religious sites.
Tech & Connectivity
(Save your money)
- •SIM Cards: Do not pay for expensive international roaming plans. Local SIMs or eSIMs can be purchased for $3–$8 USD, providing massive amounts of high-speed data.
- •Power Adapters: Malaysia uses Type G plugs (UK-style). Basic adapters are available locally for under $2 USD.
Behavior & Etiquette
Malaysia is a multicultural country where "low-key" behavior is appreciated.
Dress Code
Standard athletic gear is fine for the court. When off-court, "athleisure" is perfectly fine, but please avoid being shirtless in public areas. If we visit religious sites, shoulders and knees must be covered.
General Etiquette
Public displays of affection (PDA) or overly aggressive shouting in public spaces are generally frowned upon. A polite, respectful attitude goes a long way.
Legal Awareness (US vs. Malaysia)
Things that may be legal or "minor" in the US carry severe penalties here:
Strict Drug Laws (Zero Tolerance)
This includes CBD oil, medical marijuana, and vape pens containing THC. Possession is a serious offense that can lead to mandatory imprisonment. Do not bring any cannabis-derived products.
Vaping Status
As of 2026, Malaysia has implemented much stricter regulations on vaping. To avoid issues at customs, we recommend players do not bring large quantities of vape products.
Prescription Meds
Always bring a copy of your doctor's prescription for all medications to avoid issues at customs.
Legal Trouble
Go Global Hoops cannot and will not provide legal assistance, bail, or financial representation should a participant encounter legal trouble, arrests, or fines while in the country. Participants are also held personally and financially liable for any damage they cause to third-party property, including but not limited to hotel rooms, basketball courts, locker rooms, or chartered transportation vehicles.
Pro-Tips for the Delegation
Grab App
Download the Grab app (Southeast Asia's Uber). It is the safest and most transparent way to get around or order food to the hotel.
Hydration
Do not drink tap water. Stick to bottled or filtered water (which we will provide at all sessions).
TnG App
Download the Touch N Go (TnG) eWallet app for Malaysia. It offers cashless payments, mobile top-ups, and easy bill payments throughout the country.
